Living Empathy

McKenzie and I walked into school today and were greeted by a little girl with whom, I assumed, McKenzie does not play with often. She asked McKenzie if she wanted to play with her. I cringed when McKenzie’s only response was, “I’m another classmate’s friend.”

After washing her hands, I pulled McKenzie off to the side and asked her how she would feel if someone told her that they didn’t want to play with her. She answered, “Sad.”

“Then why would you want to make someone else sad?” I asked. “You can play with others, too. Not just the other classmate, especially since she is now busy eating.”

McKenzie answered with an enthusiastic OK and went over the the little girl, asking what she wanted to play.
